Who is a jester?
A jester is an specific type of clown that was hired to tell jokes in royal courts mostly associated with the Middle Ages in Europe. Jesters often made fun of court life. They wore a distinctive floppy hat with three points and jingle bells called cap 'n bells.
Other names for a jester are: fool, buffoon/boufon, narr/naar or juglar
Alphabet Activity: Letter J is for Jester
Present and display your option of alphabet printable materials listed:
Present and display the poster and distribute the coloring page for a first presentation for young children four years old or younger or handwriting practice worksheet for older children.
* Finger and Handwriting Tracing:
Trace letter J's in upper and lower case with your index finger as you also sound out the letter. Invite the children to do the same on their coloring page or tracer. Encourage the children to trace the dotted letter with your choice of sharpened crayon, fine tip marker, coloring or regular pencil, and explain the direction of the arrows and point to the numbers with arrows that help them trace the letter correctly. During the demonstration, you may want to count out loud as you trace so children become aware of how the number order aids them in the writing process.
*Find the letter J's: Have the children find all the letter J's in upper and lower case on the coloring page and encourage them to circle or trace/shade them first. Visit each child to make sure they have identified the letter J's and then discuss the locations with the poster.
