Alphabet Activity:  Letter O is for Oak
and activities to celebrate the United States National Tree

This alphabet letter O is for Oak presentation can complement and celebrate America's choice for a National Tree -- the OAK tree.   The National Arbor Day Foundation (arborday.org) conducted online "elections" in 2001 - Vote for America's National Tree -  and invited Americans to vote to select a national tree.  OAK was the people's choice.

Here are educational resources and printables courtesy of arborday.org to support your educational presentations of the oak tree:
*National Tree poster - PDF format
*Classroom Activities and Games (all ages)
Present and display your option of alphabet letter O Oak printable materials listed:

Alphabet Letter O Oak poster, coloring page and handwriting practice tracer: Standard block or D'Nealian.
  Present and display the poster and distribute your choice of coloring page for a first introduction and younger children or extended handwriting practice tracer for advanced Pre-K and higher.

Define, and discuss the word oak
The oak tree:  its leaves and fruit, the acorn are traditionally associated with the autumn season.  Encourage the children to "dress" the oak coloring page for an specific season with a variety of materials.

* Finger and Handwriting Tracing
Trace letter O's in upper and lower case with your index finger as you also sound out the letter.  Invite the children to do the same on their coloring page or tracer.   Encourage the children to trace the dotted letter with your choice of sharpened crayon, fine tip marker, coloring or regular pencil  and explain the direction of the arrows and point to the number 1 with arrow that help them trace the letter correctly.   During the demonstration, you may want to count out loud as you trace so children become aware of how the number order aids them in the writing process.

*Find the letter 0's:  Have the children find all the letter O's in upper and lower case on the coloring page or extended tracer.  Encourage them to circle or trace/shade the letter O's first.  Visit each child to make sure they have identified the letter O's and then discuss the locations with the poster.

Letter O long sound wordsLetter O Activity Worksheet and Mini Book  This worksheet and matching mini-book can be used as part of Letter O (long sound) program of activities to reinforce letter practice and to identify related o words.  Read suggested instructions for using the worksheet and mini-book.

Focus on the long O sound words:  oval, ocean, oak, overalls, etc. First 'brainstorm' and ask the children about other words that have that beginning sound and write them on a board (dry erase board) as the children come up with examples.  You can print letter o in a different bright color to make it stand out.  If you have illustrated alphabet books you can also use images in them. You can also display  letter  posters and coloring pages or even make a letter O classroom book.  For related images visit:  Letter O Printable Materials.
