Here are printable materials and some suggestions to present consonant digraph Sh.

Level: kindergarten and first grade after the basic alphabet sounds have been mastered.

Include this lesson as part of a sheep, lamb and/or shepherd theme.

Animals > Mammals > Domestic > Farm > Sheep

The sheep is an animal with hooves, hollow horns, and long, curly hair.  Sheep are mammals that are raised for their wool; some people also use their milk and meat.  They are closely related to goats.  A lamb is a young sheep, or its meat used as food. The adult female is called an ewe, at lambing time is called a dam, and the male a buck or ram.

Children Age 3 and under:

* Finger Tracing:
Trace digraphs Sh in upper and lower case with your finger as you also sound out the letter.  Invite the children to do the same on their coloring page.

* Children can color and trace the digraph Sh's. After completing the letter coloring, encourage children to color the sheep image.  Provide some cotton balls to paste on the image.

Children Ages 3+ and older >
Consonant Sh Activity Worksheet and Mini Book features four Sh words: shark, sheep, shepherd, shoes.   This worksheet and matching mini-book can be used as part of  program of activities to reinforce learning this digraph.  Read suggested instructions for using the worksheet and mini-book.

*Find the Sh sound:  Have the children find all the letter Sh's in upper and lower case on the worksheet and encourage them to circle or trace/shade them first.  Visit each child to make sure they have identified the digraph Sh's and then discuss the locations with the worksheet.

* Finger and Pencil Tracing:
Trace the Sh's in upper and lower case with your finger as you also sound out the digraph.  Invite the children to do the same on their coloring page (first presentation) or handwriting practice worksheet.
Encourage the children to trace the dotted letters with your choice of sharpened crayon, fine tip marker, coloring or regular pencil and demonstrate the direction of the arrows and numbers that help them trace the letter correctly.  During the demonstration, you may want to count out loud as you trace so children become aware of how the number order aids them in the writing process.

Discuss other letter Sh words and images:  First 'brainstorm' and ask the children about other words that have that beginning sound and write them on a board (dry erase board) as the children come up with example.  You can print Sh in a different bright color to make it stand out.  You can also display other Sh coloring pages or even make a classroom book.  Visit Letter Sh Printable Materials and coloring pages to make your choice.

Advanced independent handwriting practice:
1. Print your choice of printable lined-paper and encourage children to draw a sheep behind the page or print a sheep coloring page.

2.  Drawing and writing paper  Encourage children to draw, and color a sheep and write digraph Sh.
