Ages 2.5 + to 6
The ladybug is an insect that is a tiny hero in our gardens,
so come and have fun with this tiny and colorful creature.
The children will have fun making an easy and fun craft of a ladybug
mainly designed with heart shapes. Note one of the antennas
is a number 6
to learn that insects have six legs, the
other antenna is an inverted six. The L legs
are optional - and three of them are upper case
letter L for Ladybug, and the other three legs are inverted
letter L's. Many other printable support materials and links to related
activities are provided.
The craft is appropriate for a St. Valentine's Day
theme, Bible Story or Nursery
Rhyme activities.
Activity #1: Ladybug Beetle - Lady Bird Craft Ages 2.5+
Tell the children they are going to have fun with activities
related to a wonderful and beneficial insect, the ladybug!
Review your options for printing and assembly of the craft that best meets your needs.
Before assembly conduct some of the learning activities suggested
below:
Printing and assembly options for the craft:
NOTES:
1. The craft can be made without legs
(appropriate for ages 2 to 3 or large groups & limited time
situations) and with letter L legs or shape black pipe cleaners in the
shape of letter L's.
Option 1: Print craft color template cut out,
conduct learning activities below and
assemble.
Option 2: Print black and white template.
Children can color, paint or decorate first, cut out and proceed
as above.
Option 3: For Large Groups and to recycle left over
materials.
Print black & white template on card stock and use as a master
template. Trace the patterns directly on folded construction paper,
left-over paper, fun foam to obtain number of pieces indicated.
Body template can be also printed directly on red paper.
Other decorations and ideas for the craft option:
1. Trace and cut pieces on fun foam, use wiggly eyes instead of
the eyes template and pipe cleaners for legs and antennas.
3. Tape a ribbon, string or a piece of magnet to back of head to use as decoration
or ornament. Glue against a gift bag to decorate.
4. Puppet: Glue the craft to a craft stick, or drinking
straw for an instant puppet.
Learning Activities to conduct before craft
assembly:
Choose learning activities according to your curriculum needs and
children's age.
Shapes & Colors Activity:
1. Ask children to identify the shapes and colors on the
template pieces (after coloring) or if using the color template.
Numbers/Pre-Math Activities:
To conduct these activities pieces should be decorated and cut out.
1. Sorting & Sizing the Heart Shapes: Have the children sort the
hearts by color and size (smallest to largest)
2. Counting: Count how many of each size there
are. You may want to write numbers on the blank side to acquaint
the children with printed numbers. In this activity you may want
to also count the eyes.
3. Fractions: Tell the children the large heart is
divided by a thick line. Each side represents half of the heart,
two halves make a whole or one.
Proceed with craft assembly. Show the small image
provided in the template to help the children see how the finished
craft looks and if necessary make a demonstration to aid them in positioning the pieces. After
completing the craft the children can hold their finished craft while
conducting some of the activities below.

Children's literature recommendations:
Ladybug, Ladybug (Picture Puffins) (Baby - Preschool) by Ruth
Brown
This book is a delight for preschoolers as it expands beautifully
on the nursery rhyme.
The
Grouchy Ladybug (Ages 4-8) and other Eric Carle's books.
Great for learning manners and so much fun!
Activity 3 > Online Jigsaw
Puzzle > Ladybug
Objective: View this image of the animal and review
facts. Problem solving skills.
Have fun with an online puzzle of a real ladybug that can be adapted
from 6 pieces to 247. The whole family can have a try.
Click on the Change Cut button to adjust
number and shape of pieces.
Bible Activity
Suggestion:
This is also a wonderful insect to include in Bible related activities
as it was possibly named after an important and blessed lady -- Mary, the
mother of Jesus.
Idea: Make the craft and use it to tell a Bible Story
related to Mary, such as The
Annunciation (great for Mother's Day too!) from the point of
view a tiny ladybug as a witness of the event. Children love
when another character, such as a cute animal tells the
story.
