Chirp, Tweet, and Sing! Meet Our Feathered Friends, the Songbirds!
- They're Part of a Big Family! Songbirds are a bird suborder called Passeri that is part of a huge group of birds called the Passeriformes, which means "perching birds." This family is the largest order of birds in the world, with over half of all bird species belonging to it!
- Masters of Melody! Songbirds get their name because they have a special voice box called a syrinx that lets them make beautiful, complex songs. They use their songs to attract mates, warn other birds of danger, and even to mark their territory.
- Tiny but Mighty! Many songbirds are quite small, but don't let their size fool you! They can be incredibly strong flyers and some migrate thousands of miles every year.
- Nest Ninjas! Songbirds are amazing architects when it comes to building their nests. They use all sorts of materials like twigs, grass, mud, and even spiderwebs to create cozy homes for their eggs and baby birds.
- What's for Dinner? While some songbirds love to eat seeds and berries, many are insect-eating champions! They help keep pesky insect populations in check, which is super helpful for our gardens and farms.
- Bright and Beautiful! Lots of songbirds are known for their vibrant colors, like the bright red of a Northern Cardinal or the sunny yellow of an American Goldfinch. These colors often help them stand out to find a mate.
- Songbirds for USA! Many states have designated songbirds for state birds. The northern cardinal is designated in seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. The western meadowlark is designated in six states: Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming. The northern mockingbird is designated in five states: Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennesse and Texas. Review all the U.S. State Birds coloring pages.
