What is a quilt? @ Wikipedia
Explain what is a quilt and view some images. A quilt is a bed covering made of two or more layers of material that are filled with feathers, wool, cotton, or other soft materials. The layers are stitched together using patterned stitching or a patchwork technique so that it makes patterns on the top layer.
Alphabet Activities:
Display the poster and discuss the visual elements. The alphabet poster showcases a quilting theme: the equipment (sewing machine} and notions essential to quilting. A quilt may be sown by hand entirely or a sewing machine is often used. A quilt's top layer pattern often has a theme, 'tells' a story, or the motifs have a message, or cause. Quilts are also a way to preserve family history and passed on as heirlooms. Colors and shapes: Most quilts have a square shape or a more rectangular shape to fit a bed mattress size. Identify the squares and also the main background colors which are the primary, secondary colors plus brown, pink and gray. Children Age 3 and under: Print a letter Q coloring page in standard block or D'Nealian font and a quilt coloring page (found below) behind it or on a separate page if using finger paints to decorate later. Discuss other letter Q words found on the worksheet. Finger Tracing: Trace letter Q's in upper and lower case with your finger as you also sound out the letter. Invite the children to do the same on their coloring page. Children can trace and color the letter Q's. After completing coloring the letter, encourage children to color the coloring page and write letter Q q and the word quilt on the margin. Handwriting worksheet tips: Encourage the children to trace the dotted letter, and explain the direction of the arrows and numbers that help them trace the letter correctly. During the demonstration, you may want to count out loud as you trace so children become aware of how the number order aids them in the writing process. Have the children find all the letter Q's in upper and lower case on the page and encourage them to circle them. Coloring and decorating the quilt blocks: Both the alphabet coloring page and worksheet have a blank option (choose [2]) to personalize, color and decorate the quilting blocks. Color the background first, then add one of these: stickers, dot marks, doodles, or ink stamping. Children ages 3+: Letter Q words: Letter Q Worksheet Program and Mini-Book can be used as part of program of activities to reinforce letter practice and to identify related words. Read suggested instructions for using the worksheet and mini-book. You can also display letter posters and coloring pages or make a letter B home or classroom book.
