Animals > Mammals > Farm > Sheep:

The sheep is an animal with hooves, hollow horns, and long, curly hair. They are closely related to goats.

Domestic sheep are mammals that are raised for their milk, meat and wool. Sensory experience > Have children touch wool mittens, a sweater or wool yarn.

A lamb [image] is a baby or young sheep, or its meat used as food. A female sheep is called an ewe, at lambing time is called a dam, and a male is called a buck or ram.

Where do lamb live? Some live in the wild, but most are domestic and live on farms. They move in groups called flocks.

What sound do sheep make? Sheep bleat, BAA, BAA (sing a nursery rhyme)

A shepherd is a worker who herds, feeds and watches over sheep.

Consonant Digraph Sh > Kindergarten - 1st grade level:

Explain that when letter 's' and 'h' "tag along together" they make the /sh/ sound. Invite children to make the sound.

Print consonant digraph Sh coloring page D'Nealian or Standard Block font. Select and print an age appropriate sheep coloring page on the back or on a separate sheet.

Finger Tracing: Trace digraph Sh in upper and lower case with your finger as you also sound out the letter. Invite the children to do the same on their coloring page.

Children can color and trace digraph Sh following instructions. Use finger paints, crayons or water colors. Write Sh and the word sheep on the finished coloring page.

Handwriting worksheet tips:

Encourage the children to trace the dotted digraph, and explain the direction of the arrows and numbers that help them trace letters correctly.

During the demonstration, you may want to count out loud as you trace so children become aware of how the number order aids them in the writing process.
