Understanding our national symbols is important to develop an important character trait -- citizenship.

Visit a very simple craft for young children to introduce a very special animal, the bald eagle, a United States national symbol.

The craft can help to enhance the related activities and skills below in the following areas: alphabet practice: E e is for Eagle, incorporate as part of a bird theme unit, and United States patriotic holiday presentations.

Materials:

• printer
• paper, card stock
• coloring tools for B&W template
• scissors
• glue stick
  
• standard lunch paper bag or, attach to wide craft stick
• craft feathers for coloring pages or crafts

Eagle coloring pages

The Founding Fathers chose the bald eagle to be the national bird of the United States in 1782. It is one of the best known symbols of our government. The eagle can be seen on the Great Seal of the United States, on the Presidential Seal, in the logos of federal agencies, on coins, paper money, and on postage stamps.

Activity: Eagle Coloring Pages:

• Print a coloring page, and using a standard ruler's width trace a line over the upper and lower edge of the ruler, then a middle line to make writing lines. Write letter E e eagle in dots.
  
  
• Have children color and paste a few dark color craft feathers to the wings and chest. Optional: add a small wiggly eye.
  
  
• Insert the coloring page in a sheet protector, and trace letter E e eagle with dry-erase markers, this can be done a number of times.
