ABOUT KIWIS:
- The kiwi is a flightless bird and the smallest of the ratite group that includes: the ostrich, the cassowary, emu and the rhea.
- The kiwi is shy, nocturnal, omnivorous and has peculiar plumage that is hair-like and lacks good vision.
- Its sense of smell is highly developed, and it has nostrils at the tip of its long beak, which helps it find food.
- Kiwis are the size of a chicken, the males hatch the eggs, and mate for life. The common kiwi lays the largest egg in proportion to its size.
- Kiwis prefer subtropical and temperate beech and podocarp forests.
- Of the five existing species, four have vulnerable conservation status.
