ABOUT DRAGONFLIES:

Dragonflies are amazing insects that have been around for millions of years. They have many skills and abilities that make them unique and fascinating.

  • Dragonflies are very fast fliers. They can fly in any direction and even hover like a helicopter. They can fly faster than most birds and some small airplanes.
  • Dragonflies have excellent eyesight. They have two large compound eyes that give them almost 360 degree vision. They can see many colors, including some that humans cannot see, such as ultraviolet light. They use most of their brain to process visual information.
  • Dragonflies are carnivorous and eat other insects, they are great hunters, they catch about 95% of the insects they chase. They love to eat mosquitoes, which is good, as mosquitoes can carry diseases.
  • Dragonflies have a three-stage life cycle. They start as eggs, then hatch into nymphs (larvae), and then molt into adult dragonflies. They spend most of their life as nymphs in the water, where they hunt for small animals and plants. Some nymphs can stay in the water for up to five years before becoming adults.
  • You can have have a lot of fun coloring dragonflies, since they are very colorful. They can change their color depending on the temperature, their age, or their mood.
