TURTLES: NATURE'S LITTLE TANKS!
  • Three Main Types: There are different kinds of turtles! Some live mostly on land – we call them tortoises. Others, just called turtles, often live in freshwater like ponds and lakes. And then there are sea turtles that live in the big ocean!
  • Homes All Over: You can find turtles living in lots of different places! Tortoises like grassy areas, deserts, and forests. Freshwater turtles live in ponds, rivers, and swamps. Sea turtles travel all around the warm parts of the ocean.
  • Built-In Protection: That hard shell on a turtle's back is called a carapace. It's like a super strong shield that helps protect them from other animals that might want to eat them. They can even pull their heads and legs inside to stay safe!
  • Slow and Steady: Turtles are known for being slow movers, especially tortoises on land. This helps them save energy as they search for food. Sea turtles, though, can swim surprisingly fast in the water!
  • Plant Eaters and More: While tortoises mostly munch on plants, other turtles have different diets. Some freshwater turtles eat fish and bugs, and sea turtles eat things like jellyfish and seaweed.
  • In Danger: Sadly, many kinds of turtles, tortoises, and sea turtles are endangered. This means there aren't many of them left because of things like pollution, losing their homes, and getting caught in fishing nets. It's important for us to help protect them!
