ABOUT BEAVERS:
  • The American beaver is the largest rodent in North America, and the Eurasian beaver is slightly smaller. They can grow up to three feet long and weigh over 100 pounds.
  • Beavers teeth are orange, due to iron in their enamel, which makes their teeth very strong to chew through wood.
  • Beavers are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants. Their favorite foods are leaves, twigs, and bark.
  • Beavers are nature's engineers and builders. They are famous for building dams. They use branches, mud, and stones to build dams across rivers and streams. The dams create ponds, which beavers use for their homes.
  • Beavers are semi-aquatic and excellent swimmers. They can hold their breath underwater for up to 15 minutes!
  • Beavers are very social animals. They live in colonies of up to 12 beavers.
  • Beavers are very important to the environment. Their dams help to control flooding, filters the pollutants in the water and create habitats for other animals.
  • Beavers are a national symbol of Canada.
