Observances: November 29 - International Jaguar Day
The Jaguar: America's Jungle Predator (and his Black Panther Secret!):
- The Largest Feline in the Americas: It is the continent's largest cat and the third largest in the world (after the tiger and the lion).
- They Have the Most Powerful Bite: Their jaw is the strongest among all big cats, capable of piercing tortoise shells and the skulls of large prey.
- They Love Water (and Swimming!): Unlike many other wild and domestic cats, the jaguar is an exceptional swimmer and a skilled hunter in rivers and swamps.
- Revered by the Ancient Mayans and Aztecs: In Mesoamerican civilizations, the jaguar was a sacred symbol of power, strength, and was even associated with the underworld.
- Its Dark Version is the Famous Black Panther: A jaguar with melanism (an excess of dark pigment) has entirely black fur and is popularly known as a Black Panther. It is still a Panthera onca, just a darker one!
- Elite Camouflage (with Predator Eyes): Its base coat ranges from yellow to reddish-brown, covered with unique rosettes (black rings with dark spots inside). Its eyes are often a striking amber or greenish-yellow, which aids in nocturnal hunting. Additionally, its tail is relatively short and often features black rings.
