- Snorkel Noses! Look closely at a tapir's face – they have a long, flexible snout, almost like a little trunk! This "proboscis" is super handy. They use it to grab yummy leaves and fruits from branches, and even as a snorkel when they swim underwater! How cool is that?
- Forest Gardeners: Tapirs love to munch on all sorts of plants, fruits, and berries. As they eat and move around the forest, they help spread seeds in their poop! This is super important because it helps new trees and plants grow, making them like the forest's own little gardeners.
- Homes Across the World: You can find tapirs in two main parts of the world! Three kinds of tapirs live in Central and South America, in places like the Amazon rainforest and even in chilly mountains. And one special kind of tapir, the Malayan tapir, lives all the way across the world in Southeast Asia!
- Water Lovers: Even though they look big and bulky, tapirs are fantastic swimmers! They love to hang out near rivers, lakes, and swamps. They'll dive in to cool off, escape from predators, and even walk along the bottom of the water while looking for tasty plants to eat!
- Tapirs Need Our Help! This is a very important fact: Sadly, all species of tapirs are endangered or vulnerable, which means their populations are shrinking and they need our protection. Their biggest problem is losing their forest homes because of people cutting down trees. But by learning about them and helping spread the word, we can make a difference and help these unique animals thrive!
