Paper Lantern Craft - Tiger Theme

Tiger theme paper lantern craft, a printable activity suitable to celebrate Chinese New Year or a tiger theme. The Lantern Festival is the last day of Chinese New Year festival.

Skills developed: scissor cutting, following a set of instructions.

The tiger is one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Motto: "I Win"  Colors: purple and green. Tiger years: 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034, 2046

Print these instructions and lantern template 'color the tiger' or black & white.  Black & white version can be printed on light green paper and colored in.

Read all the instructions first. As you read the instructions, have children point and identify the solid, dashed, and dotted lines on the template. Adults will help with some of the assembly and folds needed. Children will make a check mark or an X next to the number as each step is completed.

Assembly instructions:

_____ 1. Cut along the solid lines ___. Note: The large piece with the tiger image will be the lantern and the long strip at the bottom is the lantern's handle.

_____ 2. Color the tiger image. Optional: draw or add other decorations around the tiger's image and borders.

_____ 3. Fold along the dotted line (...) in the center. Note: the decorated side should be visible.

_____ 4. Fold along the dotted lines backwards in the top and lower border.

_____ 5. Carefully cut along the slashed lines (----) from center fold and stop cutting at the border fold.

_____ 6. Open the lantern template flat.

_____ 7. Apply glue over the area designated "Glue here" and bring the opposite side and paste over the area with glue.

_____ 8. Adjust the cut folds of the lantern to go outward.

_____ 9.  Glue, staple or tape the lantern's handle.

Congratulations! You have completed your paper lantern. Hang on a special place with a piece of string.
