Observances: June 22 - World Camel Day to recognize how camels are important to the livelihoods in many parts of the world, there are drastic declines in camel populations, and bring attention to the critically endangered wild Bactrian camels.
ABOUT CAMELS:
- Camels come in two flavors: one-humped dromedaries and two-humped Bactrian camels! Imagine a comfy backpack, that's what their humps are like, full of fat to keep them going for weeks without food!
- Even though they live in hot deserts, camels don't store water in their humps, but in their blood! They can drink up to 30 gallons of water at once, that's like filling a bathtub in just a few minutes!
- Those long eyelashes aren't just for looks! They help camels keep sand out of their eyes during sandstorms. Like fancy sunglasses for the desert!
- Camels are super strong! They can carry almost as much as a car, and even run as fast as a racehorse for short bursts!
- Believe it or not, camels have distant cousins in South America called alpacas, llamas, vicunas and guanacos! They all belong to the same animal group called camelids!
