Activity: Present the nursery rhyme
"Hey Diddle Diddle" is an English nursery rhyme and it may have origins dating back over a thousand years. Early medieval manuscripts show illustrations of cats playing a fiddle, and later "Cat and Fiddle" was a common name for inns. The earliest recorded version of the rhyme appears in 1765.
The rhyme is also the source for the expression "over the moon" which means overjoyed, extremely happy, delighted.
Text perhaps dating back 1765 is still in use at present, except Jill was spelled Gill:
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed
To see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
Print, read and sing the nursery rhyme with the poster, and review the video at YouTube.

Themes to present:
"The cat and the fiddle": the traditional image of a cat playing a fiddle is so much fun, and is an opportunity to present the fiddle or violin, a string instrument. Visit the cat theme and the fiddle or violin. |
"The cow jumps over the moon": Discuss what is the expression "over the moon." Here is another fun animal that also starts with letter Cc, the cow and the topic of the moon is also a fun learning possibility. |
