Loud Lion Facts:
- King of the Jungle? Not quite! Lions are part of a special group called "big cats," but they actually mostly live in grassy plains and open woodlands in parts of Africa and a tiny bit of India, not really jungles!
- Second Biggest Cat! Among all the big cats like tigers, jaguars, and leopards, the lion is the second largest! Only tigers are bigger. That's a lot of cat!
- Lion Families are Called Prides! Unlike most other big cats, lions live in special family groups called prides. A pride can have many lionesses (girl lions), their cubs, and a few male lions.
- Roar-some Voices! A lion's roar is super loud and can be heard up to 5 miles away! They use their powerful roar to tell other lions where they are and to protect their territory.
- Mane Magic! Only boy lions have those awesome, shaggy manes around their faces! The bigger and darker a male lion's mane, the stronger and healthier he usually is, which helps him attract a mate.
The lion is the national animal of: Ethiopia, Gambia, Iran (Persian lion), Kenya, Libya, Luxembourg, North Macedonia (coat of arms), Morocco, The Netherlands (heraldic symbol), Norway (royal national animal), Sierra Leone, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Togo and the United Kingdom.
